A Renault R35

Considering all these failings, a new model was soon ordered. The R40 had an improved suspension, and carried a long-barreled SA38 37 mm (1.46 in) gun better suited to take out tanks. The shell could penetrate up to 40 mm (1.57 in) of armor at 500 m (1640 ft), thus being able to take out the front armor of the early model Panzer III. The tank was better protected than most of its opponents with up to 60 mm (2.36 in) of armor. All units included a radio.

A total of 900 of the R35s were available at the outbreak of the war, and a few of the later R40 models made it into service in time to face the Panzers. A large number of R35s were captured in the German invasion. Some were used as-is, while others were modified as tank hunters by fitting them with larger guns, and some were given to Italy.
